I didn't realize they were that expensive.

Says its the 50-year edition, but yea seems a little high. Still not liking the body colored diffuser.

Same with mine. $38K is quite high for the one I looked at. Also saw a few of the F150 Tremors. $45K for, what I would consider, half a truck.

They're not, really? It looks like that has literally every possible option, and a dealer markup on top.

they're using the 'truck pricing' scale.

No dealer greed, look at the window sticker. It really comes right to $42K with delivery. ~$5K in options. Nowhere near all the options either, you can get one to over $45K, more if you skip the 50th anniversary pack. For that money, I'd get a 2-series.

Fair enough.
My point is more that ~40k isn't really that expensive for what you're getting.
That also won't buy you much of a 2er.
I'm not wholly up to speed on the prices for those, but Ms. Pants just bought a 3er, without really going nuts, and it stickered in the mid-50s. I'd expect the smaller car to be 5k-ish less. (Since that tends to be BMW's usual gap), which still puts you way over the Mustang, for a smaller, slower car.

A $40K 228i is very nicely equipped. $42K is the base price of an M235i, and it is very well equipped at that price, having ~$7K of stuff standard that is optional on a 228i, plus another 80hp. I do like the new Mustang, but it costs too much for what it is, and the EcoBoost is way too tuned down from what it should be. God-forbid it eat into V8 sales. I was actually very excited about the EB Mustang, but I test drove one a couple days ago - total buzzkill compared to the 228i. Felt like a boat, but at least they ride properly now. As always, you get what you pay for, the BMW is well worth the added coin, what will replace my Abarth next year.
And of course, the biggest advantage of the BMW is European Delivery. A nice discount on the car, AND you get to drive it around Europe.

I think you might be thinking about actual purchase price on the bimmers, not sticker. I just priced one out for myself, and a well equipped but not loaded 228 came out to $45,225.
While I would also go for the BMW, I don't think Ford is wildly overpriced.
You're still talking about a considerably larger car with a full 100hp advantage.

Spec'd as I will order mine, it is ~$38K MSRP. I expect to pay something under $34K with ED discount. Even at that price it has a number of features that the $45K Mustang doesn't. It has more than enough power to get your license shredded in the US.
The Ford is wildly overpriced for what it is, which is a Ford. Great value at $25K, but $45K for the same car with a cheap V8 in it?

I think we're clearly going to end up having to agree to disagree, here.
I am curious what the 2er has, that the Mustang doesn't, equipped the way you want?

The BMW Track Handling Package (adjustable suspension, big brakes, Michelin PS tires), a BMW interior, a BMW exterior, and European Delivery. :-) The Mustang is much larger on the outside but smaller on the inside - the 2-series actually has a usable back seat.
I've always "almost really liked" Mustangs. I was hoping that the 2015 would turn that into "really like" and offer a substantial savings over the BMW. Neither happened, I was quite disappointed in the new car. It's much improved, but still no BMW, and the price is just way too close.

I'm with you. I've almost bought a 'stang three times, I think, and I've ended with a Miata and two WRXs.
It'll be interesting to see what these end up selling for after the initial rush. I'll bet that 45 ends up closer to 38 in six months.
